When do you need a custom Shopify app?

Custom app, App Store app, or theme code: how to decide, and what a well-built app looks like.

By Lloyd Robinson, Shopify Partner and founder of LloydRdigital in Crewe and Liverpool.

Three different tools

Theme code changes how a storefront looks and behaves for one shop. A custom app adds a workflow, an integration or an admin tool for one merchant. A public app is a product you sell to other merchants.

Most teams ask for an app when they need one of the first two. Building a public app is a company, not a feature.

Signs you need a custom app

A person on your team repeats the same admin task every day. An off-the-shelf app is close but wrong, and the workaround is a spreadsheet. Two or three apps overlap and their scripts are slowing the storefront.

An ERP, warehouse or PIM that must stay in step with orders and stock is another clear case. Theme code is the wrong place for that logic.

Signs you do not

You want a new homepage section. That is a theme. You want a review widget that already exists and is fast enough. Buy the app. You want a discount rule Shopify Functions can express in a small, supported way. Start there before commissioning a platform.

What a good app feels like

It lives in the Shopify admin and looks like it belongs there. Merchants are not sent to a separate website to do daily work. Storefront pieces are theme app extensions, so they survive theme updates.

Privacy webhooks, billing and a boring README are part of the build, not a phase two. A custom app for one shop is a smaller job than a public app that has to pass review.

Questions on this guide

What is a Shopify theme app extension?

It is the storefront part of an app, installed as a block in the theme editor. It survives a theme update, unlike code pasted into a theme file. That is how a custom tool should meet the shopper.

Can a custom app slow my Shopify store down?

It can, if it injects a script on every page. A careful app loads its storefront code only where it is used, and keeps admin work in the Shopify admin. Ask where the script runs before you add another one.
