Shopify or a custom website: how to choose in 2026
A practical comparison of Shopify and a custom-built website: flexibility, speed, search and who owns the work.
By Lloyd Robinson, Shopify Partner and founder of LloydRdigital in Crewe and Liverpool.
Choose the job, not the trend
Shopify is not always right. A custom site is not automatically more serious. The right choice is the one your team can run, and the one that matches how you make money.
If you sell products, take payments and need inventory, Shopify is usually the shorter path. If you sell a service, a booking, or a story, a custom site is often cleaner.
When Shopify is the better tool
You have a catalogue, variants, delivery rules and a need to edit products without a developer. Checkout, payments, tax and a huge app ecosystem are already solved.
You can still have a bespoke storefront. Custom design on Shopify is not the same thing as a stock theme. The platform handles commerce. The theme handles the brand.
When a custom website is the better tool
You are a clinic, a studio, a consultancy or a product company whose site is a marketing tool rather than a till. Booking tools, long-form storytelling and unusual interactions are often simpler outside a commerce platform.
Beautifully Enhanced is a custom site for that reason. The job is trust and booking, not a catalogue of a thousand SKUs.
Ownership
You should own the theme code, the content and the domain either way. Shopify then has its own monthly plan and any apps you choose to keep. A custom site has its own hosting. If a proposal does not say what you own, ask.
Speed and search
Both can be fast. Both can be slow. Shopify is fast when the theme is lean and the app count is disciplined. A custom site is fast when it is built that way, not because it is custom.
Search cares about structure, speed and clarity. The platform is secondary to those.
A simple way to decide
If the primary action is 'add to basket', start with Shopify. If the primary action is 'book' or 'enquire', start with a custom site, and add commerce only if you need it.
If you are unsure, the 20 minute call is for this question. I would rather point you to the smaller build than stretch a platform that does not fit.
Questions on this guide
Is Shopify bad for SEO?
No. Google reads structure, speed and clear pages. A lean Shopify theme with proper titles, headings and fast images can rank. A bloated theme with a dozen app scripts can struggle. The platform is not the ranking factor. The build is.
Can I move from a custom website to Shopify later?
Yes. Keep the URLs you can, redirect the ones you cannot, and move the content rather than starting the words from scratch. The catalogue and checkout are the reason to move. The brand does not have to be thrown away.
