Do motion websites pay off?
When interactive and scroll-led websites return their cost, and when they are a vanity project.
By Lloyd Robinson, Shopify Partner and founder of LloydRdigital in Crewe and Liverpool.
Motion is a cost until it does a job
A moving site can raise perceived value, help a launch travel, and make a product understandable in a way a static page cannot. It can also add weeks of build time and hurt people who prefer less motion.
The return is real when motion explains something, or when the brand's price depends on how finished it feels. It is weak when it is a backdrop for ordinary brochure copy.
Where it tends to pay
Premium products, launches, and campaign pages. A 3D view that replaces five photos of a mechanism. A scroll sequence that shows a process a paragraph would bury.
It also pays when the site itself is the sales tool for a studio or an app, as with DropClicker, where the interface has to feel as capable as the product.
Where it does not
A local service site that needs a phone call. A catalogue where people want filters, price and delivery. Heavy WebGL on the product grid of a furniture store will cost you the people who came to buy.
If the primary action is commercial and frequent, keep motion off that path. Put it on the brand story, not on the buy button.
How to keep it honest
Content stays as HTML so search engines can read it. Scenes get lighter on phones. Reduced-motion settings are respected, not ignored.
Agree the job of the motion in the proposal: what it explains, or what it is allowed to cost in time. If that sentence is hard to write, skip the effect.
Questions on this guide
Do moving websites rank on Google?
They can, if the content is real text in the page and the motion does not block the first paint. If the story only exists inside a canvas, Google and answer engines have little to quote. Build the words first, then add the movement.
Is a motion site a bad idea for a local business?
If the job is a phone call or a booking, a calm page with a clear action is usually the better site. Save motion for a launch, a product that needs showing, or a brand where the finish is part of the sale.
